Molly’s Musings

Let’s go back to the way “before time”. It was the Spring of 2015 and we were all 7 years younger. But I digress.

About the Project

We had a very active group of members that were living outside, and were well-known in the community surrounding the Resource Centre. The Homeless Action Week Grant was a project mounted to help breakdown stigma and assumptions about our members who were living outside in our community.

As we continued to strive to break down the walls of stigma erected over many decades, our homeless folks wanted to be a part of this project as did other community members.

The project paired community members with nine of our members who were living outside in the community. Each participant received a disposable camera and were asked to take pictures of their community from their perspective. They documented what they saw, where they lived, or where they worked.

Curating the Exhibit

Once the photos were in and developed, we had a day where the community folks and our members met up at for a buffet breakfast at the Resource Centre.

After breakfast, participants paired up, spread out through the Resource Centre, and got to work. They discussed their photos, and together they each picked the one they wanted to use at the show. They proceeded to write about the photo chosen. Once completed, photos and written works were gathered up and a lunch was shared.

We dry mounted both the photos chosen and the written works that went with each photo. We mounted the image and written work together to present at the Petley-Jones Gallery, located in our community. The Gallery Manager participated in the project as well which was terrific.
